Twenty two years ago I helped a USA Sales rep set up the marketing for an Atlantis underwater camera, for my efforts he gave me a camera,
The next time I went ice fishing I tried it and to my surprise, when it hit the bottom a large amount of sediment kicked up. I kept looking at the screen, hoping the sediment would clear up so I could see. As I was watching the camera screen, I noticed small creatures darting past the camera lens in all directions. These small creatures were SCUDS a small amphipod that live in the bottom sediment along with red worms,/wigglers (mayfly larva) and other bug larva. Once the sediment settled, I saw lots of perch coming into feed.
Have you ever caught a perch in deep water and when they come up they are puking up a brown slug? That’s SCUDS! Many of these invertabrates live their juvenile life stage at the bottom of the lake in the sediment. They then emerge as various flies and flying bugs.
Why it works
The Amazing Perch Caller does 3 things:
It stirs up the bottom thus exposing the amphipods
It creates a flash from the 2.5” silver and gold spoons, emulating injured and feeding baitfish.
The beads make a clicking sound like small crawfish, which perch love to eat.
All of this mimics large bottom feeding fish like carp, suckers, whitefish, walleye etc. Perch follow these bottom feeding large fish as they kick up the small amphipods. All of this combined will attract fish from 150ft around your ice fishing hole.
How it Works
What you will need is a 14”-18” heavy duty rod, these can be hard to find. To make your own short rod find an old bait caster and cut it off at the first guid from the handle. This will work just fine. Load a reel up with 30-40lbs mono or braid. Run your line from the reel to the large eye on the rod and tie on The Amazing Perch Caller.
Then Just Pound The Bottom and they will come running!
